Turnkey engine test facilities for industrial applications can be provided incorporating a wide range of different dynamometers including d.c. regenerative, Froude Consine eddy current dynamometers and hybrid units. Regenerative and hybrid units are supplied as transmission dynamometers with in-line torque transducers. Powers ranging from a few kW up to 1600 kW are available as standard. For high torque low speed applications for tests involving transmission components, friction brake dynamometers capable of absorbing torques up to 50 kNm are available. Dynamometers are usually supplied mounted on a heavy steel base plate, which may be bolted down either onto a concrete floor or it can be supported at a convenient height on a solidly constructed frame. A comprehensive range of plant and instrumentation is available, including fuel gauges, throttle actuators, oil, coolant and fuel service modules. Custom design and manufacture of engine mountings plus modifications to engines, including the fitting of transducers and encoders, is undertaken. Control and Instrumentation:Installations will typically incorporate a fully integrated computer control and data acquisition system. The standard COMPEND 2000 Windows NT compatible Computer Control and Data Acquisition system provides automatic test sequence control, complex load modelling, alarm monitoring and data acquisition with virtual instrument displays created on the PC screen and data logging to Excel spreadsheet by dynamic data exchange. The standard SLIM 2000/ETB Engine Test Bed Serial Link Interface Module provides a total of eight analogue inputs and two pulse counting inputs for PC data acquisition and display of dynamometer speed, torque, fuel consumption (when supplied with TE 12 Automatic Volumetric or TE 14 Gravimetric Fuel Gauges), cooling water inlet, cooling water outlet and exhaust gas temperature. Extra data acquisition channels to accommodate additional transducers may be provided by addition of SLIM 2000/AUX Auxiliary Serial Link Interface Module. DCR Regenerative Engine Test BedsGeneral:The DCR Test Bed incorporates a foot mounted separately excited d.c. machine driving via an HBM T10F in-line torque transducer. Power is transferred by means of a four-quadrant thyristor drive allowing the dynamometer to operate in both absorbing and motoring mode with smooth transition between modes. In absorbing mode, power is regenerated into the electricity main. With this type of control an infinitely variable load can be applied at constant speed or set to a constant load with a variable speed. Speed holding is within +0.1% of the full speed. The regenerative dynamometer is capable of switching from motoring to absorbing extremely rapidly, typically 15 to 20 milliseconds or better subject to the inertia of the load and the maximum torque of the dynamometer. The dynamometer can also be used as a motor for starting the engine and for measuring internal losses. Torque is measured by load cell. Speed is measured by proximity sensor on toothed wheel and by tacho generator. Computer Control:COMPEND 2000 Windows NT compatible Computer Control and Data Acquisition software provides sequence programmable CLOSED LOOP control of speed, load and throttle actuation. Froude AG Eddy Current Engine Test BedsGeneral:Test beds incorporate Froude Air Gap Eddy Current Dynamometers. These units have significant advantages over wet gap dynamometers in terms of durability, serviceability and high-speed performance. The Froude dynamometer is torque reaction trunnion mounted with torque measurement by load cell. Speed is measured by proximity sensor on toothed wheel. Energising Coils are fully encapsulated two-piece coils used in place of the more common and cheaper single coil arrangement. This configuration ensures optimum distribution of flux throughout the working area for maximum low speed torque. The rotor is manufactured from a high magnetic permeability material for maximum performance and is designed for minimum inertia. Precision grade bearings are used to ensure accurate shaft location and high safe operating speeds. The dynamometer is supplied mounted on a heavy steel base plate, which may be bolted down either onto a concrete floor or it can be supported at a convenient height on a solidly constructed frame. Control and Instrumentation:Each installation is supplied with a Texcel V4 Controller providing CLOSED LOOP control of torque, speed plus power law mode. The control unit is contained in bench mounting cabinet and provides digital displays of Torque (Nm) and Speed (rpm), control of dynamometer demand and control mode. Computer Control:COMPEND 2000 Windows NT compatible Computer Control and Data Acquisition software provides sequence programmable control of the engine and test bed, including CLOSED LOOP control of speed, load, throttle actuation and control mode.
