The installation comprises four friction brake dynamometer assemblies and a PC based computer control and data acquisition system. Each dynamometer comprises a pneumatically operated friction brake, which is trunnion mounted with a torque reaction arm restrained by a strain gauge load cell. Torque is measured by means of the load cell and shaft speed is measured by a tachogenerator.

The friction brakes are disc brake type activated by a single annular pressure tube. Torque generated is directly proportional to the applied pressure.

The dynamometer shafts are connected directly to the vehicle final drive flanges by gear couplings guaranteeing torsionally rigid connection between the vehicle and the dynamometer. Angular misalignment and support of the axle weight is achieved by means of integral self-aligning bearings located inside the gear couplings. Skew misalignment is catered for by removing the vehicle steering track rods.

Control of pressure to the brake pressure tubes is achieved by means of PID controlled pneumatic valves with feedback from integral pressure transducers. Fast frequency response is achieved by minimising the air volume in the system by part filling the pressure tube with hydraulic fluid.

FRICTION BRAKE DYNAMOMETERS (Front Axle)

The two units are functionally identical but are constructed to provide a matching pair of dynamometers capable of providing front axle support and power absorption capability of 15 kNm per wheel and a supporting capability of 9 tonnes per axle.

Front Left Hand:               15 kNm rating

Front Right Hand:                          15 kNm rating

Friction brake:                               Type CSM 127 pneumatically actuated disc brake.

Cooling water flow:                        67 litres/minute for maximum heat capacity

Heat transfer capacity:      91 kW continuous (130 kW intermittent)

Inertia, hub & centre:                     2.8 kgm2

Air supply:                                     6.0 bar

Trunnion mount:                        4.5 tonnes vertical load capacity

Controlled Torque range : 0.75 to 15 kNm

FRICTION BRAKE DYNAMOMETERS (Rear Axle)

The two units are functionally identical but are constructed to provide a matching pair of dynamometers capable of providing front axle support and power absorption capability of 20 kNm per wheel and a supporting capability of 9 tonnes per axle.

Friction brake:                               Type CSM 130 pneumatically actuated disc brake.

Cooling water flow:                        88 litres/minute for maximum heat capacity

Drive Flange Adaptor:

One flange adaptor supplied per brake, machined to suit customer specified drive flange. Further flange adaptors can be supplied to suit other vehicle flanges.

To provide failsafe cut-out to prevent damage to the brake if a failure of cooling water flow is detected.

Temperature switches:

To provide a failsafe cut-out to prevent damage to the brake if an over-temperature condition arises on the brake discs.


COMPEND 2000 COMPUTER CONTROL SYSTEM

General

The COMPEND 2000 PC based sequence control and data acquisition system provides two software based control modes:

Manual Mode:

This permits tests to be run with the dynamometer load manually selected from the keyboard.  This mode is intended for use in test procedure development.

Automatic Mode:

This mode is intended for normal operation. The software is used for control the dynamometer load, test duration and to trigger data logging.

The COMPEND 2000 software is Windows based and Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT and XP compatible. The software employs Windows “look and feel” features for easy user access to all machine and test set-up parameters.

Data may be stored to hard disc and the software includes an auto-scaling trend display for monitoring test progress. At the end of a test this graph may be dumped to a Windows printer.

Data is stored in "comma separated variable" format and may be manipulated for calculation or graphical presentation in standard spreadsheet software programs.

Tests are defined by a sequence of steps, each step containing control set points, data recording rates and alarm level information. Set points may be adjusted by step change or ramp. The test sequence is followed unless interrupted by the operator or an alarm. Set points may also be adjusted manually during the operation of the test sequence.

Dynamometer Control:

The system for controlling friction brakes incorporates output of a torque demand (either from a set point or from a load model) to a software torque PID controller in parallel with a torque predictor. The torque PID controller is provided with torque feedback from the dynamometer torque transducer. The combined output from the torque PID and torque predictor are provided as input to the hardware based pressure PID controller.

The system is capable of applying a 2 Hz sinusoidal torque variation of 10% of full scale amplitude with a phase lag between demand and response of less than 100 ms. To achieve this precise control, it is necessary to close the torque feedback loop. The load models cannot tolerate step changes in torque feedback. It should also be noted that engine governors cannot normally adjust to rapid changes in wheel speed.

In order to test transmissions under conditions of limited slip action it is necessary to introduce additional inertia to absorb torque or speed transients and to provide the necessary over run performance, which is not provided by an absorb only dynamometer system.

The control accuracy of load torque in steady state conditions is typically better than  ± 1% of full scale.

Dynamometer Control Modes:

Mode 0 - Open Loop Pressure Set Point

Mode 1 - Closed Loop Torque Set Point from Test Sequence File

Mode 2 - Closed Loop Torque from Square Law Speed Model

THROTTLE ACTUATOR

TASC throttle/injector rack actuator and servo controller is designed for direct connection to the throttle via a heavy-duty flexible cable. It may be provided with a set point from the COMPEND 2000 computer control system.

             Stroke:                             Minimum 25 mm. Maximum 140 mm

             Maximum pull     :             At  25  mm stroke - 55 kg continuous

                                                     At 140 mm stroke - 10 kg continuous

             Response time:    0.5 second for full travel

GRAVIMETRIC FUEL METER

TE 14 Gravimetric Fuel Consumption System, automatic cycling version. This item is supplied as an automatic cycling remote sensor which continuously fills and empties between two pre-determined levels. The output from the gauge is an analogue signal proportional to the level of fuel in the gauge and in conjunction with the COMPEND 2000 system provides resolution to 0.25 gm and a repeatability of 0.1 % of measured mass.

INSTALLATION AND COMMISSIONING

Phoenix Tribology will provide the services of two engineers. It has been assumed that the customer will provide the necessary site preparation including a suitable building with a strong floor and appropriate services. It is assumed also that there will be suitable lifting facilities and technician assistance.

PACKING AND FOB

The equipment will be packed for sea freight.
