Description:

The TE 97 Friction and Wear Demonstrator is designed for introducing students of tribology to a range of phenomena including dry and lubricated sliding friction and wear, two and three body abrasion and stick-slip. The unit is capable of operating in pin on disc, crossed cylinder and in block on ring test configurations.

The unit is bench mounting and incorporates full COMPEND 2000 control and data acquisition resources, with test data recorded in Excel spreadsheet compatible file format. The unit comprises a motor and reduction gearbox, which carries the test disc spindle. Load is applied by means of a screw acting on an extension spring.

Instrumentation comprises a slotted opto switch and sixty tooth wheel for speed measurement, a force transducer for friction measurement, a force transducer for load measurement, two thermocouples for temperature measurements and a displacement transducer for wear sensing.

The test disc spindle incorporates an electrical slip ring, which, in conjunction with electrical insulation of the pin/block specimen carrier and a Lunn-Furey circuit, allows electrical contact resistance measurements to be made. Electrical insulation of the specimens also allows the possibility of electrochemical experiments (adhesion/corrosion or abrasion/corrosion) to be performed in conjunction with a suitable potentiostat.

A test bath with integral electrical resistance heater is provided to allow tests to be run with heated lubricant supply.

For three body abrasion tests, the unit is used in block on ring configuration with either dry abradant or abrasive slurry gravity fed into the contact between the block and the rotating disc.
